Live to Forgive: No Substitute
As we grow closer to Jesus through Lent, I invite you to enter into a season of reflections with me entitled, Live to Forgive!
“I am writing to you who are God’s children because your sins have been forgiven through Jesus (1 John 2:12)!”
When Jesus went to the cross, it became clear there was no other substitute that could wipe away our sins forever. The God/man who never gossiped, never lied, never cheated, never betrayed, never let the idea of power or fame consume him, nor money persuade him was the perfect sacrifice to redeem the world. There was no substitute for Jesus for our forgiveness. God sacrificed his own son and commanded us to forgive one another as He forgives us.
Yet, the human heart struggles to forgive. Really at times it seems impossible. There is no substitute for the power of the Holy Spirit to guide us in truly being able to forgive others. We are reminded in 1 John 2 that we have been given a new commandment, really an old one, and it is that we are to love one another. Reminding us that as children living in the light (as Jesus did), we are actually living in the dark if we hate any of our brothers and sisters in Christ. Let us give up hate for love. There is no substitute for love. There is no substitute for the freedom and healing we experience when we work through the process of forgiving others.
Dear Jesus you died to forgive . . . help us live to forgive . . .
. . . by praying for a soft heart filled with love for those who have wronged us.
